Mt. Vernon, OR to Dayville, OR
I woke up late this morning knowing I was in for a short day. It felt nice to sleep in and not worry about spending 6 hours on the bike today. Since leaving Yellowstone I have put in some big mileage days, including 5 days of 80+ miles. Prior to Yellowstone I had only done 2 days of 80+ miles. Now that I have a flight booked to head back to the east coast, I know what my schedule is and have some flexibility in taking a couple short days.
There was a church to stay at for free just 24 miles down the road, so we made that the destination for today. It’s easier to take a short day knowing it’s free. I wouldn’t have spent money on a hotel to only make 24 miles of forward progress.
I spent some time this morning planning out the last week of riding and trying to figure out how to get my bike shipped, bags shipped, and get myself to Portland. It is going to be tough logistically, but I think I’ve got a plan figured out.
After a lazy morning, I got on the bike around 11:30 and rode the 24 miles to Dayville. When I got there I stopped at a cafe for a burger and then went to the store across the street to pick up some food for later. I then headed to the church where I found Stephen and Joe. The church is a great place to stay tonight. It has a full kitchen, shower, and washer and dryer. We all took some time to relax and then Joe cooked up a big pot of pasta for us all to share.

Tonight we are going to try and watch the new episode of Game of Thrones. Tomorrow is another short day, but a lot of climbing. We have another hostel to stay and that looks really nice and should be cheap. I’m just hoping we get out of the desert soon so I can see the Oregon scenery closer to the coast that everyone has been talking about.
