Richland, OR to Baker City, OR
I somehow convinced myself last night that today was going to be an easy day. Only 43 miles and the elevation profile didn’t look too bad. I knew there was a climb towards the end of the day, but before the day started I was ready to consider today as a rest day.

Unfortunately my analysis of the elevation profile was off. As soon as the day started I was back in a canyon winding my way uphill. That lasted for about 35 miles and included a headwind for most of the day. It wasn’t a great day in terms of fun riding, but I at least had radio reception and was able to listen to music. I’ve been so deep in the canyon the last few days that there wasn’t any radio reception.

At mile 35 the road turned slightly downhill into Baker City. Baker City is one of the larger towns we’ve gone through in a while, with a population of 10,000+. Once we got into town Stephen and I stopped into a McDonald’s for lunch and then headed to the Bike Hostel. The hostel is one of the nicest hostels I’ve stayed at during this trip and included a garden we were free to pick from and a chicken coup.

When Stephen and I got to the hostel we found Joe, who I hadn’t seen since Kansas. Charlie and Mike are also staying at the hostel along with Jordan and Lincoln, who I had heard about but just met tonight. After settling in to the hostel and taking a rest, Stephen and I headed to the local brew pub for some food and beers. I got a huge plate of pasta along with a couple of beers that we’re very good. We then headed back to the hostel to rest up and prepare for tomorrow’s ride.
