Day 47: 18 Miles

Breckenridge, CO to Silverthorne, CO

Finally a rest day! I haven’t taken a rest day since Louisville on May 24th. Today is a much deserved break after all the climbing I’ve done since Pueblo. The hostel I stayed at last night was amazing and when I woke up there was a great breakfast ready in the common area.

The hostel I stayed at is called the Bivvy. There was a really interesting group of people staying there. It seems like Breckenridge is a spot where several trails converge. There was a girl hiking the Continental Divide Trail, a guy biking the Colorado Mountain Bike Trail, and a few other people hiking through the area. I met a few of the people staying at the hostel at the Breckenridge Brewery and then we got a few cases of beer and continued to talk back at the hostel. I’m happy I had a rest day planned because it allowed me to stay up later than normal and learn about everyone else’s trips. Most of these people were way more hardcore outdoors people than me, so I learned a lot. It also seems like my trip has been easy in terms of places to stay and food options compared to some of the others.

I got out of the hostel around 10:45 and started my short ride to Silverthorne. The route from Breckenridge to Silverthorne is all bike trail and passes a few breweries along the way. I decided to make this a leisurely day and make a few stops along the way. The first stop was at the Broken Compass Brewery. They had a great selection of beer that was much better than Breckenridge Brewery. I had a Ginger Pale Ale, Coconut Porter, Chili Pepper Pale Ale, and a Mosaic IPA. All were excellent. Some of the best beer I’ve had on this trip. Next time I’m in Breckenridge I’d definitely make the 4 mile trip outside of town to go back.

I left Broken Compass around 1:30 and coasted about 11 miles downhill to the town of Frisco where I first stopped at Prosit, a German beer and sausage place. I got a couple of sausages and a Dunkel which were all really good. After leaving Prosit I headed to Outer Range Brewing Company, also in Frisco. I swear this is the most scenic brewery crawl you can do. The beer at Outer Range was also really good. They specialized in ales but had a really nice selection.

After a few beers at Outer Range I biked the final few miles to Silverthorne where I had a hotel room reserved. Today was an awesome day. I covered 18 miles, but barely had to pedal. I found 2 really good breweries and will go to another one tonight in Silverthorne. Tomorrow I’ll be back to waking up early and doing a real day of riding, but today was a really nice break both mentally and physically.
